Yazidis who escaped described the systematic way in which ISIS had captured them: as ISIS had approached the town of Sinjar, it had also attacked many of the surrounding towns in the region, which all had sizable Yazidi populations. Many captives also came from these towns, including Kojo, located just south of Sinjar, where eighty men were executed when the village elder had refused to convert to Sunni Islam. In the village of Koocho, the entire male population, four hundred people total, had been executed in the week following ISIS’s attack on Sinjar. Most of the women there had been taken captive as well.
